Step by Step method


1. Mix the flours and salt together in a bowl. Cream the yeast with  little of water and leave until frothy. Add to the flour mixture with the remaining water, the treacle and oil and mix thoroughly to form a firm dough.

2. Turn on to a floured surface and knead for 5 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a clean bowl, cover with a damp cloth and leave to rise in a warm place for 2 hours, until doubled in bulk.

3. Turn on to a floured surface and knead and knead foe few minutes. Shape into 2 oval loaves and placed on a greased baking sheets. Prick with a fork  in 8 or 9 places. Leave to rise in a warm place for 1 and 1/2 hours, until doubled size again.

4. Brush with milk and sprinkle with caraway seeds. Bake in a preheated oven  200 C for 15 minutes. Lower the heat to 190 C, and bake for a further 30 - 40 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool.
